In the previous newsletter I had said that I’ll share some career hacks. The first career hack is to discover if you have a sweet tooth and if you do, then discover if you like dark chocolate. Wait… I will tell you more. At the SHRM Edge Conference last month, I learnt about the latest #pay #trends. Some expats are getting paid in Cryptocurrency because of its possible upside (but there is a risk too). But first, Estonia gives you a visa allowing you to live in Estonia for a year even if you are working for someone in another country. That’s called a Digital Nomad visa…
1. Digital Nomad Visa
The parliament of Estonian created a digital nomad visa that allows “location-independent knowledge workers to live in Estonia for up to a year while working for employers or clients outside of the country, ushering in a new era of work — one where knowledge workers aren’t tied to one desk or even one continent." Work From Home has already morphed into Work From Anywhere. Barbados, Bermuda, Georgia, Czech Republic, Portugal, Spain, Germany and Mexico also welcome remote workers. Already freelance work is growing way faster than the other kinds of work. In my column for Business Line newspaper, I spoke about the mindset (mindset is an Operating System), that is worth adopting even if you are employed (I call them Digital Settlers) and have no plans to be a Digital Nomad. 2. Pay and Rewards Trends
I was at the SHRM Edge 20 Conference last week. Fermin Diez of Singapore Management Univ spoke about Pay Trends. Pay is going to get linked to skills. In the job interview, it will soon become illegal (in many more countries) to ask candidates their salary information. Someone who is on a low salary finds it hard to get a fair pay. LinkedIn already has your resume. If they also start adding salary information based on industry and market trends, we could see more standardised pay packets. But there are reasons why everybody will not make the same money. This graphic has many more ideas. 3. Voice Forensics
Amitabh Bachchan, the Bollywood actor is as recognized by his deep baritone voice as he is, for his acting skills. So are many singers, actors and radio stars. There is the field of voice forensics that can be used to identify so much more. By listening to your voice, it is possible to find out your age, physical health conditions, mental health, substance abuse and more. Even your height can be worked out based on your voice. The dimensions of the room and even the make of the laptop can be identified. As People Analytics develops further, many new data points will be used. This will be triggered by the workforce working from multiple locations. If you are using Voice related information for employees do share that in the comments.
4. Career Hack: Discover your Dark Chocolate
Career Hack No 1: Discover if you have a sweet tooth. Imagine your career path to be like a buffet. You have to try out various things and discover which category makes you want to go back for seconds. Do you like to sample a little bit of everything or do you like some sections more? That depicts whether you like being a generalist or a specialist. My sweet tooth always takes me to the dessert section. Then within that section try to find if there is a dessert that you are crazy about. In my case that was dark chocolate.
I tried all the aspects of HR before discovering that my passion lay in simplifying complex ideas. So learning and development seemed to give me the most thrill. That was my “dark chocolate”. Self-awareness is the biggest driver of career success.

The bitcoin payment you've mentioned seems quite an interesting change. I think this is as good as paying employees in terms of stocks (highly volatile ones), which might reduce the trust among them for the firm. Don't you think so?
